Privacy Policy
This policy explains how Kapitel: German Stories (“Kapitel”, “we”) handles information when you use our iOS or Android app.
Who we are

Information we collect
Account
When you sign up with email, we store your email address and a hashed password (handled by our auth provider; we do not see your raw password). If you use Google Sign-In, Google shares your name and email so we can create your account.
Profile and reading data
We store, tied to your account:
- Display name, German level (A1–B2), weekly reading goal, and reader settings
- Story progress (where you left off, completion)
- Favorite stories and saved vocabulary (including optional personal notes)
- Optional vocabulary practice results
- Feedback you send from the app (subject and message)
On your device
We keep a signed-in session on the device using the platform’s secure storage. We also keep a local flag so we know whether this account has finished introduction.
We do not collect
- Payment card details (the app has no in-app store checkout)
- Precise location, contacts, photos, or microphone recordings
- Advertising IDs for ads (Kapitel does not show third-party ads)
Device text-to-speech, if you use it, runs on the device. Optional “Buy me a coffee” opens Buy Me a Coffee in a browser; that site has its own privacy policy.
How we use information
- To create and secure your account
- To sync reading progress, words, and settings across launches
- To show stories at the level you chose
- To respond to feedback you send
- To operate, protect, and fix the service
We do not sell your personal information. We do not use it for third-party advertising.
How we share information
We share data only with services that run Kapitel:
- Supabase — authentication and database hosting. Your account and reading data live there, protected by access rules so other readers cannot see your private data.
- Google — only if you choose Google Sign-In, and only for sign-in.
- Apple and Google — as needed to distribute the app through the App Store and Google Play.
We may disclose information if required by law, or to protect Kapitel, our users, or others from fraud or serious harm.
Retention
We keep account and reading data until you delete your account. After deletion, we remove your profile, progress, saved words, favorites, practice history, and feedback associated with that account, except where we must keep a limited record to comply with law or resolve abuse.
Your choices
- Edit your name, level, and reading settings in the app
- Sign out at any time
- Delete your account in the app (You → Delete your account) or follow these steps
- Email us to ask what we hold about you, or to correct it
If you are in the EEA, UK, or a similar jurisdiction, you may also have rights to access, rectify, erase, restrict, or object to certain processing, and to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.
Children
Kapitel is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has created an account, email us and we will delete it.
Security
We use encrypted transport (HTTPS), access-restricted databases, and device secure storage for sessions. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure.
International transfer
Our hosting provider may process data in the United States or other countries. If you use Kapitel from elsewhere, you understand that your information may be processed outside your country, where privacy laws can differ.
Changes
We may update this policy. The “Last updated” date will change. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised policy. Material changes will be reflected on this page.
